Description |
NatureBib
|
The NPS database for cataloging park and network natural resource-related documents, publications, and references. NatureBib also allows for uploading and serving full-text versions of documents (e.g., pdf or doc files), which all networks are encouraged to use. |

|
A web-based system for data users and data producers to post and disseminate natural resource-related metadata and data. This data store is not limited to GIS data; rather, any and all natural resource-related data sets are appropriate for inclusion here. Data currently in the Data Store include natural resource data sets, boundary data, base data, and GIS layer standards. |
| A desktop utility (MS-Access) for creating and managing abbreviated metadata about natural resource-related data sets. Dataset Catalog has typically been used for cataloging non-geospatial data sets such as spreadsheets, databases, data tables, or other data assemblages such as photographs or field forms. As of 2006, no new software development will take place for Dataset Catalog; however, it will be supported and bugs or errors corrected. Plans are for the Dataset Catalog to be phased out and its functions incorporated into Tools & Editor workforms and the NPS Data Store. The User Board for the NPS Data Store serves as the Dataset Catalog User Board. | |

NRDT is a core database structure that can be adapted by parks and networks to accommodate specific inventory or monitoring sampling protocols. Empty MS-Access data tables can be downloaded, or the data structure can be used in other software applications. NRDT is the recommended format for databases developed to manage vital signs monitoring data. |
| A series of Microsoft Access-based templates that allow networks to enter their water quality data in a STORET-compatible format. NPSTORET includes templates for entering information about Projects, Stations, Metadata, and Results, allowing networks to document the "Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How" of their water quality monitoring activities. NPSTORET also includes a Reports & Statistics template for generating reports, analyzing the data, producing graphics, exporting the data, and generating SIM-compatible import files. | |
|
A custom software app for creating or editing FGDC-compliant metadata. This tool extends the basic functionality of ArcCatalog and can be used either (1) as an extension within ArcCatalog versions 8.3/ 9.x or (2) as a standalone desktop interface. The application is intended to be the primary editor for metadata that will be uploaded to the NPS Data Store. The NPS Metadata Tools and Editor produces XML metadata based on the NPS Metadata Profile. |
GIS Theme Manager |
This is an ArcView extension that helps users organize and use GIS data themes. The tool allows users to create lists of themes for particular projects, areas or management issues. It also catalogs these themes, so that a user simply selects a theme from a popup list and the Theme Manager adds it to a view along with a descriptive title, displays it with a legend, perhaps adds hotlinks or help files, and links it to metadata. Use of Theme Manager varies: some parks and networks have adopted it wholeheartedly; others prefer to use their own methods. |
Vital Signs Internet Mapping Services (VSIMS) |
The NR-GIS program at WASO has been collaborating with several networks to develop web-based tools that allow users to explore monitoring data via an ArcIMS application. Great Lakes Network provided the initial funding support for this, and other networks have contributed if or as they can. A draft implementation of the GLKN application can be viewed at http://nrintra.nps.gov/glkn. This project is in its infancy; much work remains to be completed in 2006 and 2007. |
|
A collection of wizard-based tools that augment ArcMap by providing easy-to-use functions for commonly-performed tasks. Included in the AlaskaPak install is an ArcMap toolbar and an extensive online help system. Version 2.0 of AlaskaPak is designed for ArcGIS 9.2 (although it appears to work with ArcGIS 9.1). Future support will be limited to ArcGIS 9.2 and higher. |

Permits are required for anyone conducting on-the-ground research on a park unit. RPRS is a web-based application used by researchers, park staff, and the public for completing and tracking the steps of requesting and issuing research permits, and reporting on research accomplishments (via the IAR - Investigator's Annual Report). |
|
This is an up-to-date (but unofficial) MS-Access database of NPS units. The units are a superset of legislated unit, organizational unit, and pending unit information managed by other NPS offices and programs and include over 630 unit records. Each unit is identified by a unique 4- to 8-character alphabetic code. This database is a good source of unit codes that may be needed by networks or cooperators. |
