2009 I&M Data Management Conference

April 20-23, 2009, Tucson, Arizona

(updated April 16, 2009)
Agenda

The 2009 NPS Inventory & Monitoring Data Management Conference will be held in Tucson, Arizona, at the Tucson Marriott University Park hotel (880 East Second Street, Tucson, AZ 85719).

Sessions will take place at the hotel and at the adjacent University of Arizona campus. Plenary and breakout sessions are scheduled for Tuesday through Thursday, with Monday reserved for an optional day-long project management class.

A block of rooms has been reserved at the hotel at the per diem rate of $124 (single or double). The reservation number to call is 800-228-9290. Please make sure to mention you are with the National Park Service Data Management Conference when making reservations to ensure the government rate. (NOTE: The room block was released on March 20, 2008; neither rooms nor the government rate can be guaranteed.)

Conference Registration

A conference registration form is posted on the NRPC SharePoint site (NPS only). If you are unable to access the SharePoint site or the registration form, please contact Margaret Beer. List of attendees (as of April 15)

A one-day introductory class on project management is being offered on Monday, April 20. NOTE: Class is full. The class will be taught by an instructor certified with the Project Management Institute, which governs the project management methodology adopted by NPS. The class is limited to 20 participants and the cost is $280 per person, which includes books and materials.

Conference Agenda

The conference agenda is now finalized. This year's meeting has fewer sessions, which we hope will allow us to treat some subjects in greater depth. Concurrent afternoon breakout sessions are planned for Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, show-and-tell sessions are scheduled each morning, and the conference "swap meet" will be Thursday evening (after all the show-and-tells have been presented).

Wall space within the meeting rooms will be available throughout the conference. While there is no formal poster session planned, please feel free to bring any items you'd like to display.

In addition, the NPS Intermountain Region is holding a Wilderness Forum in Tucson the same week as the Data Management Conference (attendees are staying at the Marriott), and we may be able to have a shared session. More details to follow.

Note on Field Trips: At this time we are not offering any organized field trips on Friday; however, if you're staying an extra day, here are several recommendations from the Sonoran Desert Network on things to see in and around Tucson.

Logistics

Tucson is served by most major airlines and the hotel is approximately 8 miles southwest of the airport. Shuttle service directly to the Marriott is available from Tucson International Airport via Arizona Stagecoach. Cost is $22.00 round trip. Cab fare is around $30.00 one way.

The Marriott is adjacent to the University of Arizona, and a variety of shops and restaurants is within walking distance.

The Project Management class will be held on the University of Arizona campus, in the DeConcini Environment & Natural Resources Building, 520 North Park Avenue. This is a short walk from the hotel -- see attached map.
