2007 NARSEC was an international workshop that brought together practitioners, researchers, and program staff committed to advancing the science and practice of monitoring park landscape condition, especially with remotely sensed data. This meeting was co-sponsored by the US National Park Service (NPS), the Parks Canada Agency (PCA), and the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). The meeting was in Santa Fe, New Mexico, at the elegant Hotel Santa Fe. The telephone number for hotel reservations is 1-800-825-9876.

Meeting Objectives

    • To review and evaluate EO-based methods presently being developed by NPS, PCA and their partners for monitoring land cover, landscape patterns, and biodiversity - including their suitability, readiness and best practices for use in different  ecological conditions across North America.

    • To identify successes, challenges, and additional needs with respect to these methodologies, in particular regarding their performance, testing/evaluation, and/or operationalization.

    • To identify specific opportunities for addressing these needs through existing or new cooperative initiatives, both national and international.

    • To identify areas and mechanisms for increased collaboration among North American agencies and scientists.

    • To provide a forum for exchanging experience and ideas about the effective use of EO in ecological monitoring, management and reporting.

Meeting Highlights

Presentations will be given by invited speakers who are conducting cutting-edge studies on the use and interpretation of remotely-sensed data in national parks and protected areas. These include investigators from the Canadian GRIP project, NASA-sponsored scientists working in parks, and well-known scientists from Universities, and non-governmental and government agencies. The international steering committee has prepared the agenda to leverage the expertise of all participants for informing future efforts in landscape-scale monitoring of parks and other protected areas.

The meeting format will include:
- invited presentations
- posters
- breakout discussion sessions
- plenary discussion

The meeting will be moderated, and a synthesis report will be producted with oversight and input from the steering committee. If there is sufficient interest and committment, the committee will coordinate submissions of papers (those presented or contributed by other means) to a journal, or for publication in the NPS Technical Report series.

Papers and Posters

We strongly encourage you to bring posters of your work and display them at the conference. We will distribute abstracts of posters and plenary presentations, and provide time for poster authors to present highlights to the entire group. Please indicate whether you will present a poster when you register on-line.

Please see the presenter instructions for preparing your abstract and poster.

Registration

Please complete the on-line workshop registration form by February 23 if you plan to attend. Registration is required as your name badge will be used to identify you as a conference participant for breaks and access to sessions, and we need an accurate count of participants to arrange meeting facilities and supplies. Space is limited and we suggest you register soon.

Agenda

Plenary and breakout sessions are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, while Thursday morning will focus on management assessments, and will bring together input from the breakout groups. Thursday afternoon is reserved for project and program meetings; if you wish to organize a special group meeting please contact John Gross, or the Hotel Santa Fe directly, to make local arrangements. The Steering Committee will meet on Friday morning to summarize results, finalize production details for the meeting report, and determine future activities. There may be some changes in the schedule between now and the meeting date, so be sure to check back.

Thursday afternoon or Friday could be side meetings or travel days for particpants, but also an opportunity to visit Santa Fe and the surrounding area. Bandelier, Pecos, Fort Union, and Petroglyph National Monuments are within very easy driving distance. Taos is just up the road, and there are very interesting pueblos nearby. Santa Fe is known for its art galleries and scenery, and it is home to the Santa Fe Institute, a highly respected center for the study of complex systems.
