Vital Signs: Environment

Mountain Ridge, DENA
Mountain Ridge, Denali
The environmental vital signs, or physical drivers, important in the Central Alaska Network (CAKN) include climate, hydrology, seasonal snow cover, glaciers, permafrost, tectonic disturbances (earthquakes, volcanoes), fire, flooding, landslides, and avalanches. Many of these environmental vital signs are linked by their role in the water cycle; the others are physical disturbances (fire, landslides, earthquakes, etc.). As a result, the “hydrological cycle and disturbance” is the central theme of the environmental portion of CAKN’s 37 vital signs.

Since several agencies outside the National Park Service already monitor various physical processes (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, etc.), the CAKN will use this existing data and augment any gaps with Network monitoring.
