BIRD SPECIES AND DISTRIBUTIONS IN YUKON-CHARLEY RIVERS NATIONAL PRESERVE

Birds in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve:

Information on the Bird Inventory:

This website presents the results of a bird inventory conducted in Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve in east central Alaska (see location map) during the breeding season in June 1999 and 2000. Inventory information and results are presented in written narrative format and as an interactive information display based on 1) a location in the Preserve and 2) a bird species of interest. Maps of the Preserve allow you to select an area you may be visiting and obtain a list of the species that were detected there during our inventory effort. A Master List allows you to select a bird species and see its picture, learn about the bird, and view a map of its distribution in the Preserve. Links to descriptions and photos of the Ecological Units presented on the maps are also available.

Many thanks to the following individuals and organizations who provided materials, time, and funding for this website:

The Alaska Bird Observatory prepared many species description photos from photos taken by the following individuals: Andrea Swingley, Ken Whitten, Ted Swem, Jim Davis, Pierre Deviche, and other staff at ABO. Photos were also obtained from U.S. National Park Service, U.S. Geological Survey, U.S. Bureau of Land Management, and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service public-access slide files.

Doug Beckstead (National Park Service) provided invaluable assistance with website design and organization, consultation, and photo preparation.

Melanie Cook (National Park Service) compiled the bird species descriptions and chased down bird photos.

Debora Nigro (National Park Service) created density and distribution maps from the Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve Bird Inventory Data using ArcView GIS software.

Dave Swanson (National Park Service) created an early draft of this website, developed the ecological subsection maps, and was instrumental in site finalization.
