The Greater Yellowstone Network engages with park staff, cooperating agencies, academic partners, and others interested in working toward the overall goals listed below. Since 2000 the GRYN has coordinated and funded the planning and completion of several new biological inventories for vascular plants and vertebrates. In 2005 the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program approved the GRYN Vital Signs Monitoring Plan, a comprehensive strategy for the long term monitoring of important natural resources in network parks.
NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program Goals (NPS-75):
Inventory the natural resources under National Park Service stewardship to determine their nature and status.
Monitor park ecosystems to better understand their dynamic nature and condition and to provide reference points for comparisons with other, altered environments.
Establish natural resource inventory and monitoring as a standard practice throughout the National Park system that transcends traditional program, activity, and funding boundaries.
Integrate natural resource inventory & monitoring information into NPS planning, management and decision making.
Share NPS accomplishments and information with other natural resource organizations and form partnerships for attaining common goals and objectives.
