Natural Resource Monitoring

To help provide natural resource managers with relevant information about ecosystem health, the Greater Yellowstone Network collaborates with park staff and others to establish the status and estimate trends of resources in parks and other lands in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
Monitoring activities in network parks include projects that started before the establishment of the NPS I&M Program, along with more recent projects coordinated by the Greater Yellowstone Network.
As required by the NPS Inventory and Monitoring Program, the GRYN parks selected a set of "vital signs" - important ecosystem indicators - for which detailed plans are developed to guide monitoring activities. The process for selecting indicators, and the overall approach to monitoring, are described in the Monitoring Plan links on the right.
