Abstract:: Plant community monitoring in the Prairie Cluster and Heartland Inventory and Monitoring Network (PC-HLTN) parks is designed to define the status of the species composition, structure, and diversity of remnant, disturbed, and restored prairies and oak savanna/woodlands at given points in time, and to detect and describe long-term changes in prairie, glade, and savanna, and woodland/forest plant communities. The PC-HTLN community vegetation monitoring protocol is based on the National Science Foundation Konza Prairie Long-Term Ecological Research Program sampling design because of the similarities in plant communities and in the scale and scope of monitoring questions between Konza and the Prairie Cluster parks. The sample unit consists of two permanent, parallel 50 m transects with five circular 10 m2 plots systematically spaced along each transect. The transect pair is the primary sample unit; the plot is the secondary sample unit. Within each 10m2 plot are nested circular subplots of 0.01m2, 0.1m2 and 1m2. From the raw data collected in each sample site summary variables are calculated. Summary variables include: (1) plant species richness and diversity, (2) exotic to native ratios, (3) species relative abundance and frequency, (4) prairie plant guild relative abundance, (5) woody species density and basal area, and (6) ground cover characteristics such as percent cover of grass and leaf litter, bare soil, woody debris, and rock. Changes in these summary variables are used to detect trends over time in the vegetation community.
