Species Inventory

Through the Natural Resource Challenge, the Mediterranean Coast Network began an inventory of all vascular plants and vertebrate fauna, and identified and implemented additional studies to gather information on poorly documented or understood taxonomic groups or species.  In order to identify information gaps in baseline data, a review of all known data and data sources (i.e. museum collections, scientific literature, interview with experts, etc.) was made to get a clear understanding of what vascular plant and vertebrate fauna species is known to occur in the parks and whether 90 percent of these species have been documented through existing, verifiable data or targeted field investigations.  The results of the review were used to develop a species checklist and the identification of seventeen biological inventory projects designed to gather basic presence/absence information on all species and acquire additional distribution and abundance information for taxa of most concern to the network.
