Data Management
"A primary purpose of this program [Inventory and Monitoring] is to develop, organize, and make available natural resource data and to contribute to the Service's institutional knowledge by facilitating the transformation of data into information through analysis, synthesis, and modeling." (from the peer review guidance for the monitoring plan reviewers).
Good data management is critical for preserving the security, integrity and reliability of data. Our program emphasizes data management, including all phases of data handling (collection, entry, review, summarization, archival), as integral to our monitoring efforts. This section will have information on data management activities and standards for the network. There will also be access to data produced by the I&M Program. The network has compiled a simple presentation on data management based upon the primary chapters found in a network's data/information management plan that can be downloaded from here.

Data management, whether it is for files, folders, records, tabular or spatial data, starts with some basic practices that everyone can practice incorporating into their work environment. Such things; as file and folder naming convention standardization with no spaces or use of special characters (!,@,#,$,%,&, etc...), except the underscore ( _ ). You can download a basic data management practices document here to assist you.
The MOJN Data and Information Management Plan maybe downloaded from here (6.6MB). This is a dynamic document that is updated periodically.
