Midwest Region ESRI ArcGIS 9 Installation:

 Available Software and Licensing:

  • The ESRI software license agreement has been simplified by providing access to the full suite of ArcGIS/ArcInfo products to all users.  However,  there are 2 significant differences:
    • "ArcGIS ArcView" is no longer an option.
    • The "dual-use" option (counting a desktop and laptop, with hardware keys for each, as one installation) is no longer available.
  • A representative form your park or site must complete the NPS ESRI Software Form before installing ArcGIS 9.

  • Note that use of  ArcGIS will require one of the following:
    • Persistent Internet access capable of connecting to the NPS ESRI software license servers.  Systems obtaining their license via the Internet must have an IP address in the NPS IP range or enable a connection to the NPS intranet using VPN access.
    • Persistent access to a license server installed on the local park network.
    • Local installation of the license server software.
  • The ArcGIS licensing scheme appropriate for your installation should be decided before completing the NPS ESRI Software Form.
  • Users intending to install a local license server should obtain a hardware key (parallel port or USB dongle) and a corresponding license file before installing the software.  The dongle and license file for your installation will be sent out after completing the ESRI Software Request Form.  If you already have a hardware key, enter the key ID in the Software Request Form and a corresponding ArcGIS 9 license file will mailed to you.

General Instructions:  System Preparation

  • System preparation is key to a successful ArcGIS installation.  Due to the large number of variables, it will be difficult for the GIS technical support staff to troubleshoot problems that arise if a system was not properly setup prior to installation.
  • Please note that installation of ArcGIS should be done using a System Administrator account, not a regular user account that has been given administrator privileges (added to the domain's Administrator Group).  Contact GIS technical support for further information.
  • ArcGIS for PCs is only compatible with Windows NT/2000/XP.
  • See ESRI's ArcGIS Desktop System Requirements for more compatibility information.
  • Backup data or entire system depending on IT staff policy.
  • Update computer to latest system BIOS release.
  • Update computer to latest device driver releases (particularly graphics drivers).
  • Bring systems up-to-date regarding Microsoft Windows Patches (except Windows XP SP2).
  • Completely remove ArcGIS 8.3, if applicable.
  • Defragment the system hard drive before installing ArcGIS 9.
  • Shut down all applications and in particular disable Symantec Anti-Virus before proceeding.
  • Verify that you have all the required install media.

General Instructions:  ArcGIS 9 for Windows

  • Log on using a System Administrator account.
  • Prepare the license server connection.
  • Insert the ArcGIS Desktop CD and wait for the Startup dialog.
  • Select Install ArcGIS Desktop.
  • Select your licensing scheme (again this should be setup prior to ArcGIS installation)
  • Select defaults as prompted.  In particular, keep ArcInfo as the default ArcGIS Setup type.
  • Where disk space permits, selecting the Complete install option for the main program and subsequent modules/tutorials will provide the greatest functionality.
  • After installing ArcGIS Desktop and related extras (tutorial data, Developer Kit, and Crystal Reports), proceed with installation of ArcInfo Workstation.
  • The order of installation of the ArcGIS CD set is:
    • ArcGIS Desktop
    • ArcGIS Desktop Developer Kit
    • Crystal Reports
    • ArcGIS Workstation
    • ArcGIS Workstation (continued)
  • After installation is complete, obtain and install the latest ArcGIS Service Pack and patches from the ESRI Patches and Service Packs for ArcInfo Desktop  or the NPS Intranet.
  • Basic ArcGIS installation instructions with corresponding screen captured images.

General Instructions:  Troubleshooting

  • Like other large complex programs, random ArcGIS installation errors are not uncommon.
  • Minimize the opportunity for installation errors by following the system preparation steps.
  • If errors occur during installation or when using ArcGIS for the first time, try to uninstall then reinstall, before investing too much time or frustration into the process.
  • Here are some additional tips and suggestions should the install continue to be problematic.
