Midwest Region ESRI ArcGIS Installation:
Software and Configurations Covered:
- These installation instructions are designed to provide first level technical
support for Midwest Region parks that will be connecting to ESRI
software license servers at the GIS Technical Support Center to enable their
installations of ArcGIS 8.x products.
- Note that concurrent use ArcView and ArcInfo 8.x require persistent
Internet access to the ESRI software license servers at the GIS TSC or a
locally installed license server.
- Users intending to install a local license server should obtain a
hardware key (parallel port dongle) and a corresponding license file before
installing the software. The dongle/license file for your installation
will be sent out after completing the ELA Software Request Form.
- ArcGIS products for PCs are only compatible with Windows NT/2000/XP.
- See ESRI's
ArcGIS
Desktop System Requirements site for more compatibility information.
- Backup data or entire system depending on IT staff policy.
- Update computer to latest system BIOS release.
- Update computer to latest device driver releases (particularly graphics
drivers).
- Bring systems up-to-date regarding Microsoft Windows Patches (run Windows
Update).
- Shut down all applications and in particular disable Symantec Anti-Virus
before proceeding.
- Verify that you have all the required install media.
- These instructions apply to both ArcView 8.x and ArcInfo 8.x installations.
- Log on using the administrator account or an account with full
administrator privileges.
- Using the Add/Remove programs panel to begin the install process, rather
than the autorun install, can increase the reliability of recording program
elements in the Windows Registry.
- Select "for individual use" at the Install Type dialog box.
- Where disk space permits, selecting the "Complete" install option for
the main program and subsequent modules/tutorials will provide the greatest
functionality.
- Basic instructions for installing ArcGIS
(ArcView and ArcGIS Desktop).
- After successful installation, ArcGIS must be enabled with a
connection to
a license server.
- Alternately, a local license server
must be installed to enable ArcGIS
- ArcInfo 8.x requires installation of 2 products (ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS
Workstation).
- ArcGIS Desktop should be installed first followed by ArcInfo Workstation.
- Installation of ArcInfo Workstation (options selected) is similar to
the Desktop module.
- After installation, ArcGIS must be enabled through a connection to
a license server.
- Most users will be installing an ArcGIS configuration that will require a
connection to the license servers at the Midwest Region GIS Technical Support
Center.
- Each time it starts, ArcGIS will
connect with the license server to checkout a license.
- During use, the software will periodically verify that the license server
is still available.
- Accordingly, using the ArcGIS products require a reliable persistent
Internet connection.
- Instructions for installation with connection to a remote license server.
- You may choose to install a ESRI License
Server on your park LAN rather than connect to the license servers at the GIS
TSC.
- This option requires a hardware key
and a license file before installing the software.
- Hardware key/license file will be provided
after completing the ELA Software Request Form.
- The hardware key attaches to the parallel
port of the system serving the ESRI License Manager.
- The ESRI License Manager may be installed
along with ArcGIS on a user's GIS workstation.
- Alternately, licensing software
can be installed separately on a server or other dedicated system.
- Review the license
server installation prior to installing ArcGIS.
- While concurrent use licensing is the preferred option for ArcView 8.x users
due to its' greater flexibility and better extension options, some user
environments may dictate local licensing.
- Single use ArcView 8.x uses serial numbers to enable the software and any
related extension. Concurrent use ArcGIS products (ArcView 8.x, ArcInfo
8.x Desktop) must connect to a ESRI License Server (via LAN or Internet) to enable
the software and extensions.
- The install procedure is the same except that the license server
connection is replaced with serial
numbers for ArcView 8.x and the available extensions (Spatial Analyst and 3-D
Analyst).
- ArcGIS programs are large and complex. As such, installation
errors are not uncommon.
- The most commonly reported installation problems relate to missing or
corrupt DLLs.
- ESRI's first suggestion, in the case of failed installs, is to
reinstall using the "cleanup" switch.
- If this option does not result in a successful installation, fault is
often assumed to be a second conflicting application. In this
situation, the simplest alternative may be a "clean" reinstallation of the
operating system with ArcGIS installed as the first application.
- Here are some additional tips and
suggestions should the install continue to be problematic and a clean
install of the OS is not possible or desirable, or if you would like to
experiment a bit before resorting to drastic solutions.
