Software
- Metadata Browser Add-in for Access
Overview
GIS data stored within a personal geodatabase (an Access file)
can be viewed and manipulated both within ArcGIS and Access. However,
the FGDC metadata stored within these personal geodatabases is
stored within a relatively inaccessible binary field. This tool
uses the same stylesheets used in ArcCatalog to display this XML
metadata within a form. The form is accessible through the Add-in
menu within Access. This Add-in was written in Access 2000 and
tested with both Access 2000 and XP.
Installation and Use
- Download the zip file that contains the Add-in, MetadataBrowser.zip
(posted 4/14/2004), and decompress the zip file to a temporary
folder. The MetadataBrowser.mde file is the compiled Access
Add-in and the MetadataBrowser.mda file is the
source code for the Add-in.
- Within Access, choose Tools -> Add-Ins
-> Add-In Manager. In the manager window,
click on Add New... and select the MetadataBrowser.mde
file. This will copy the Add-in to your Add-ins folder and add
several Windows registry entries. The Add-in will then be available
within all Access databases for the current user. Other users
on the same machine will have to install the Add-in for their
profiles.
- Open a personal geodatabase within Access. Go to Tools
-> Add-Ins -> Metadata Browser
to open the browser and to view the metadata within the file.
Notes
- Add-ins are only available when a database is loaded in Access.
- Due to resizing issues within Access forms, the form and browser
sizes are locked.
Disclaimer
Manipulating a personal geodatabase within Access can corrupt
the personal geodatabase for use within ArcGIS. While the Metadata
Browser Add-in does not make any changes to geodatabase tables
or the metadata, it is possible to irreparably alter the geodatabase
using other Access tools. Please be cautious when using a personal
geodatabase within Access.
