The Midwest Geouser survey was conducted during April and May, 2007. There were thirty two responses. Results are shown below.

Summary:
Most respondents work in natural resources
Basic mapping is the chief need for GIS
Top subjects for use of GIS:

  • vegetation mapping
  • fire issues
  • land management (boundaries, designated areas, etc.)
  • habitat mapping
  • hydrology
  • fences/gates
  • roads
  • historic buildings
  • cultural studies
Dynamic features:

  • invasive exotics
  • vegetation
  • wildlife
  • fire issues
  • erosion
Most consider themselves to have "intermediate" skill levels using GIS, use GIS weekly and consider using it fairly straightforward--no major problems with the software. A few respondents feel that computer network performance hinders use of GIS.
Most see the Regional GIS Technical Support Center filling several roles (respondents could choose more than one role):

  • coordination (25 respondents)
  • assistance (23)
  • guidance (22)
  • training (22)
  • service (11)
Training needs:
  • advanced GIS (18 respondents)
  • data management/organization (17)
  • basic GIS (14)
