Vascular Plant Inventories

Benefiting Parks
Antietam National Battlefield (ANTI)
Mononcacy National Battlefield (MONO)
Rock Creek Park (ROCR)
Wolf Trap Park for the Perf. Arts (WOTR)
Prince William Forest Park (PRWI)

Summary

A survey of vascular plants was conducted at Antietam, Monocacy, Rock Creek and Wolf Trap National Parks from 2003 to 2004 using sampling protocols developed by the North Carolina Vegetation Survey as well as walk-throughs surveys. 529 species were documented at ANTI, 438 at MONO, 197 at WOTR and 187 at ROCR. Species lists were carefully reviewed. A total of 156 collected vouchers were mounted for archiving. Species accumulation curves and Jackknife estimates suggest that more than 90% of all species were documented at each park.

A separate inventory was conducted at Prince William Forest Park from 2003 to 2004. No plants on the Virginia Rare Plant List were found; two Virginia Watch List plants were found. All plant locations were logged with a Global Positioning Receiver, and an indication of the site quality and the abundance of the plant at the site were noted. Many of the species were identified in the field with no voucher being collected. For the 747 taxa, 339 voucher specimens were collected; an additional 229 vouchers were collected and identified as duplicates.

Summary

Vascular plant inventories were conductaed in all NCRN parks but after their completion grasses, sedges and rushes were considered to be underrepresented. Therefore, an additional vascular plant inventory was conducted in seven NCRN parks that specifically focused on inventorying graminoid species. The goal of this inventory was to provide park managers with a more complete understanding of the vascular plants in these parks which will enable them to make more sound management decisions.
