Bird Inventories

Birds are the best inventoried of the vertebrate taxa; however, several parks were still in need of further inventory. Those parks were Devils Tower and Jewel Cave National Monuments, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and Fort Laramie, Fort Union Trading Post, and Knife River Indian Village National Historic Sites. The inventory project also included Wind Cave National Park because the information collected there supplements a larger bird monitoring effort being conducted on the Black Hills National Forest.
For those parks that needed inventories, 83% of the undocumented birds were associated with uplands, 10% with aquatic habitats, and 7% were nocturnal.
Because of the range of birds to be inventoried, several methods were used. They included variable circular point counts, specialized searches, tape callbacks, nocturnal surveys, and nesting site surveys.
