Herpetofauna Inventories

Herpetofauna were the least documented taxon in the Network. Herpetofauna inventories were conducted at Devils Tower, Jewel Cave, and Scotts Bluff National Monuments, Mount Rushmore National Memorial, Fort Laramie, Fort Union Trading Post, and Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Sites, the Niobrara National Scenic Riverway, and the Missouri National Recreational River.
Of the undocumented herpetofauna, 35% were snakes, 30% were anurans (frogs and toads), 16% were turtles, 12% lizards, and 6% were salamanders.
Several methods were used in the inventories. They include time/area constrained searches (also known as visual encounter surveys), cover boards, calling surveys for anurans, roadside surveys, and turtle traps.
