Plant Inventories

Plants were the best inventoried taxon in the Network prior to establishment of the I&M Program. However, a few parks were still below the 90% objective. Therefore, plant inventories were completed by the I&M Program at Fort Laramie and Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Sites, the Missouri National Recreation River, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial. In addition, plant information was collected at Jewel Cave National Monument as part of a study facilitated by the I&M Program. All parks have now met the 90% target.
Plant data at the parks is augmented by other National Park Service programs. For example, Agate Fossil Beds and Scotts Bluff National Monuments have excellent plant data in part because they are currently a part of the Prairie Cluster Long-term Ecological Monitoring Program (as well as the Northern Great Plains I&M Network). And most of the parks in the Network are also included in the Northern Great Plains Fire Effects monitoring program.
