Northern Great Plains Network

Extreme Disturbance Events

Importance / Issues

  • Localized high-intensity disturbances and infrequent climatic events help shape terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems (Meyer et al. 2001, Friedman and Lee 2002, Parsons et al. 2005).
  • Inclusion of this as a Vital Sign ensures that disturbance occurrence and characteristics are recorded adequately and consistently across the Network.
