Other High Priority Inventories

These inventories include projects that are of particular concern to any given Paficic Island Network unit or to the network as a whole. In most cases the network only provides a fraction of the funding. In some cases the funding was provided through the national Inventory and Monitoring program.

Under-water sounds at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park

Honokohau small boat harbor sits at the southern boundary of Kaloko Honokohau National Historical Park (KAHO) and is slated for expansion, which would increase the ambient noise level significantly. The goal of this poject was to describe the underwater soundscape of KAHO to provide baseline inventory data on anthropogenic and natural ambient noise levels. The southern area of the park is a documented resting area for small schools of Hawaiian spinner dolphins, which are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of anthropogenic sounds. Humpback whales and Hawaiian monk seals are also visitors to park waters. Anthropogenic sounds have the potential to mask marine mammal communication, may cause temporary or permanent hearing damage, and can displace marine mammals from their habitat. Data were recorded using a boat-based sound recording system and an autonomous bottom mounted system deployed for 12 months.

Fish-pond sediment core analysis at Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park

This study uses the accumulated sediment of Kaloko Fishpond to reconstruct past environment and intensity of human activities at the site. The accumulated pond sediments were analyzed from top to bottom to describe the sediments and to determine the ages of the different layers by radiocarbon dating. Studies of diatoms, mollusks, pollen, and microscopic charcoal particles at different levels in the sediment were undertaken to determine past environmental conditions and changes. The final report will be available for NPS staff soon on the Pacific Island Network Intranet site.

Paleontological inventory for the Pacific Island Network

The NPS I&M Program has provided funding to complete baseline paleontological resource summaries for I&M networks. These inventories rely on the paleontological literature. Products include narrative reports, recommendations that can be integrated into or form the basis for resource stewardship plans, and a comprehensive bibliography.
