SEAN Inventories

Natural resource inventories are extensive point-in-time surveys that determine the location or condition of a resource. Surveys record the presence, class, distribution, and status of biological resources (such as plants and animals) as well as of abiotic resources (such as air, water, soils, landforms, and climate). Inventories may involve both the compilation of existing information and the acquisition of new information through targeted fieldwork.

The primary purpose of natural resource inventories is to assess and document the current condition and knowledge of natural resources in the parks. Inventories allow comparison of existing conditions to the natural or desired state of parks. From this, managers can establish a solid baseline for making scientifically sound decisions and long-term monitoring plans that ensure the future health of the parks.

Between 1999 and 2003, SEAN conducted fieldwork and searched existing observation records to complete inventories for nearshore marine fish, vascular plants, landbirds, mammals, and amphibians. The species inventories – cooperatively led by park staff and subject matter experts associated with the University of Alaska Southeast – have been certified and their data made available through the NPSpecies system. Full access to NPSpecies is currently available only to internal Park Service users. SEAN has extracted park-specific species lists from NPSpecies and made them available to the public below.

Full inventory reports for species and other items are also available.
