The SEAN Data Management Plan explains specific needs to be addressed by the SEAN’s inventory and monitoring (I & M) data management system over a five year period, and details the steps required to build and operate a system to meet those needs. The Charter establishes a Board of Directors for the Southeast Alaska Inventory and Monitoring Network. Its purpose is to outline the procedures by which the Board will implement and manage the long-term vital signs monitoring program and thereby fulfill one component of the Natural Resource Challenge.


Identification of Monitoring Projects and Potential Baselines Among Ongoing and Former Research in the Parks of the Southeast Alaska Network presents tables outlining basic information on all past and present research for SEAN parks that is of potential interest from a standpoint of ecosystem monitoring. Authored by Greg Streveler, it was completed on October 17, 2006.

Freshwater Scoping   Marine Scoping   Terrestrial Scoping
Three Summary Reports of the Vital Signs Scoping Workshops – Freshwater, Marine, and Terrestrial – document the early stages of the Vital Sign identification, prioritization, and selection process. The workshops gathered input from technical experts and park managers to identify candidate Vital Signs, detail their ecological and management significance, and develop conceptual ecological models. They were conducted between spring 2005 and summer 2006.



Vital Signs Selection Historical Documentation: Southeast Alaska Network was compiled by Barbara Sheinberg, facilitator for SEAN from 2005 through 2007. This March 2007 document is her historical record of the reasoning and intentions behind each vital sign discussed by the SEAN Technical Committee.


In Guidelines for long-term monitoring protocols Oakley, Thomas, and Fancy developed and presented guidelines for the recommended content and format of monitoring protocols. The National Park Service and United States Geological Survey have adopted these guidelines to assist scientists developing protocols for more than 270 national park units.
