Volunteer Opportunities
1. GET YOUR FEET WET LEARNING ABOUT LOCAL COHO AND STEELHEAD
- Our fish biologists are always looking for eager volunteers to share in the fun of monitoring coho and steelhead salmon in Marin County. There are four different opportunities to help out with salmonid research.
- Winter Spawner Surveys: Look for adult coho and steelhead, as they make their way upstream to spawn. (Nov. - Feb.)
- Spring Smolt Trapping : Smolt trapping is an excellent opportunity to monitor and handle a wide variety of aquatic species including coho salmon, steelhead, stickleback, sculpin, salamanders…and a whole lot more. (March - May)
- Summer Index Reach Monitoring (electrofishing): (June - October)
- Stream Team: Become involved in restoration of riparian areas which will benefit salmon health. (Nov. - March) - For more information about volunteering contact: Casey Del Real or call 415-464-5141.
2. HIKE THE HILLS AND DISCOVER PLANTS BY BECOMING A WEED WATCHER
- As a weed watcher you will learn to identify invasive plants of the region and report your findings. Weed Watchers patrol the trails of the national parks in San Mateo, San Francisco, and Marin counties, detecting weeds as they first invade.
3. EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT PINNIPEDS THROUGH OUR ELEPHANT SEAL DOCENT PROGRAM
- Elephant seal docents at Point Reyes are located at seal viewing areas every weekend to answer questions about the life history and important monitoring of elephant seals in the area. Our docent program is a great way to educate yourself and the public on the most up to date research of these coastal pinnipeds.
4. THE SNOWY PLOVER NEEDS YOUR ASSISTANCE
- As a snowy plover docent you will educate visitors about the natural history, plight, and protection of the snowy plovers in Point Reyes National Seashore, and provide general park information and assistance to visitors. You will also help protect threatened snowy plover nests from disturbance.
