Community Outreach

Valuable results from Volunteer Participation

With the help of AmeriCorps Volunteers and Nez Perce National Historical Park Rangers, the Camas Citizen Science Monitoring Program has been presented in communities and to organizations associated with the park, camas, and the Nez Perce tribe. In 2006-2007, AmeriCorps volunteers created written documents and multimedia materials that enabled Nez Perce National Historical Park interpretive staff to incorporate the cultural and ecological significance of camas and biological invasive threats into the park's established interpretive program. These included elements of a curriculum for use with school groups, displays and multimedia material for presentation to the public, and outreach materials such as a brochure for reaching potential citizen scientists.

By reaching the community, this joint effort by the UCBN and Nez Perce National Historical Park helps establish a pool of possible citizen scientists for future participation in monitoring activities. It also builds relationships with local communities through knowledge and understanding of the National Park Service, its natural and cultural resources and the inventory and monitoring program. This initiative also helps the parks meet their monitoring and resource management goals, and it greatly enhances the park's ability to foster a sense of stewardship for the Nation's parks and monuments within the visiting public.
