The purpose of Camas Citizen Scientist Monitoring Program is to record data about camas plants and other variables that my affect camas growth. This is in effort to understand long term patterns of camas populations. Citizen Scientists will:

  • Actively participate in 4 hours of Citizen Science training
  • Commit to 1 day of monitoring and interpretation at the Weippe site
  • Perform monitoring procedures with diligence and attention to detail

Monitoring training and field procedures will incorporate the following skills and duties:

  • Learning to identify four different species of plants
  • Ability to count plants with accuracy and repetition
  • Ability to measure using centimeters and millimeters
  • Use of Global Positioning System units to find preprogrammed points
  • Use of a compass to determine a correct bearing
  • Accurately recording data in Excel spreadsheets
  • Mobility, even on bumpy terrain
  • Ability to spend several minutes at a time kneeling or bending over
  • Remaining focused for several hours at a time
  • Communicate and work well in small groups
