Vegetation Mapping in the UCBN
Background and Status
The UCBN has teamed up with the NPS/USGS National Vegetation Mapping Program to create vegetation maps for 8 network parks. The vegetation mapping program is a cooperative effort by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the NPS to classify, describe, and map vegetation communities in more than 270 national park units across the United States. Project objectives are to map at the NVCS alliance level (field data are collected at association level) with a minimum mapping unit of 0.5 hectares and classification accuracy of 80% for each map class. Through a contract with Northwest Management, Inc., the UCBN has completed a final vegetation map and report for Hagerman Fossil Beds NM, and will soon complete a final map and report for Craters of the Moon NM&P. Planned accomplishments for 2010 include final vegetation maps and reports for Lake Roosevelt NRA, John Day Fossil Beds NM, and City of Rocks NR, as well as planning/scoping meetings and field data collection for Big Hole NB, Nez Perce NHP, and Whitman Mission NHS.
