Preparing Data for the Data Store:
In general, the data uploading instructions recommended for the NPS Data Store upload process should be followed even if data are to be posted via direct FTP.
The NPS Data Server applies the following assumptions regarding data preparation:
- Data files should be accompanied by metadata. XML metadata files should be included in a zip or tar archive file along with the data file(s).
- Data files (zipped, tarred or uncompressed) are limited to 25Mb.

Uploading Data to the Data Store:
Please note: Uploading metadata and data is restricted to authorized users only. See the 'Requesting Access to Metadata/Data Uploading and Metadata Editing' link on the NPS Data Store More Info page for details on requesting authorized access.
At version 1, the NPS Data Server allows uploading of non-sensitive data directly via FTP. However, this method is not recommended except for special circumstances. If data are posted via FTP, the only access method for retrieving these data will be via the simple browse interface of the NPS Data Server. The recommended procedure is to use the NPS Data Store upload utility that requires metadata to be posted along with the data. In this recommended approach, the data will be discoverable via the NPS Data Store search engine in addition to the simple browse of the NPS Data Server.
Uploading via direct FTP requires an NPS Data Server user account. To request an account, use the Account Request link at https://science1.nature.nps.gov/login.
