Resource Briefs

The Central Alaska and Arctic Networks are collaborating to monitor the abundance, composition, and distribution of Dall’s sheep in six of Alaska’s largest park units. The primary goal of the Arctic Network Dall’s sheep monitoring program is to determine trends in the abundance and distribution of sheep in the parks and preserves which span the central and western Brooks Range, while being statistically robust enough to deal with the difficulties of surveying in this remote area. Over 41,000 km2 of potential Dall’s sheep habitat have been delineated for this region, most of it within Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve (GAAR), Noatak National Preserve (NOAT), northern Kobuk Valley National Park (KOVA) and a small portion of Cape Krusenstern National Monument (CAKR). The region likely harbored 13-15% of the world’s Dall’s sheep population in the 1980s (Valdez and Krausman 1999), followed by a precipitous decline in the early 1990s attributed to severe winter weather that likely reduced access to forage and increased vulnerability to predation (Whitten 1997, Shults 2004). Localized surveys in small portions of the region have shown some recovery in numbers since then (e.g., Shults 2004), but little is known about park-wide and regional population trends. From 2009 to 2011, the Arctic Network will collaborate with the Central Alaska Network and Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LACL) to test the feasibility of using distance sampling (, specifically contour transect methods, to improve population estimates for GAAR, NOAT/KOVA/CAKR, Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve (WRST), Denali National Park and Preserve (DENA) and LACL. The Alaska Department of Fish and Game will also be collaborating on survey efforts in NOAT/KOVA/CAKR in 2011. These methods are expected to produce estimates of abundance with associated uncertainty, account for detection probability and provide density distribution maps for these park units. The Arctic Network will also look into using distance sampling to estimate abundance and sex and age composition of Dall’s sheep in the Itkillik Preserve in GAAR and the western Baird Mountains in NOAT, where sheep densities are highest and sport and subsistence hunting are closely managed. The regional population estimates and reference area sex and age ratio data can be used to understand population trends and focus management action. This information is also an important foundation for research questions concerning sheep productivity relative to other populations in the state; the relationship between Dall’s sheep and other ungulates and predators in ARCN parks; the relationship between snow cover and available forage and Dall’s sheep population trends; and the influence of local and global climate cycles on Dall’s sheep populations.
