The rocky intertidal zone is one of NETN's "Vital Sign" indicators for long-term natural resource monitoring. Specifically, intertidal habitats in Acadia National Park, Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, and the Maine Coastal Islands National Wildlife Refuges are being monitored under this protocol. The rocky intertidal zone is a unique habitat that is used by a variety of species, many of them at the edge of their physical and ecological tolerances. Many of these species are important food for birds and mammals that forage along the shoreline, and several rocky intertidal species have commercial value. Climate change, energy development and oil spills could threaten these resources. In addition, the NPS is concerned that the popularity of rocky shores with park visitors can lead to adverse impacts on intertidal species. Long-term monitoring data are crucial for documenting the status and importance of the rocky intertidal zone, so that threats can be addressed in a timely manner.
